A LIFETIME OF LOOKING TWICE

An introduction to briefcaseLAB and the curiosity-driven process behind our work.

June 2026 - JOURNAL // As a curious kid with an obsession with drawing and art, Matthew McCormick always had a briefcase in tow. Once belonging to his grandfather, the old briefcase was used to collect clippings, photos and other oddities that “made him look twice” - saving these treasures for later.

This childhood habit dovetailed into adulthood, with the briefcase becoming a symbolic methodology to his practice. Collecting inspirations throughout the day, often from unexpected places or in the detailed minutiae of mundane objects, became the lens in which he sees the world.

briefcase is the foundation of our brand.

Today, briefcase at Matthew McCormick Studio is a symbol woven through the lens in which we see the world and the foundation of our brand. It is an object that represents our unbridled curiosity and a platform of discovery where we play and experiment. It also serves as a reminder that innovation often begins with a simple observation or an unexpected connection, if you allow yourself the space to explore.

Take a peek into briefcaseLAB

We're opening the doors to briefcaseLAB at Matthew McCormick Studio here in Vancouver, a new space at the studio that will offer a glimpse into how ideas take shape. Through the #briefcase, #briefcaseLAB and #intheLAB tags on our socials, you'll see moments from the creative process behind our products and bespoke commissions—revealing how concepts can evolve into finished works (or don’t!).

briefcaseLAB is a workshop for experimentation and a photography studio where we get to play with light, textures and material. We can’t wait to share more.

briefcase is the place where curiosity and creative expression intersect at Matthew McCormick Studio. It’s the place we collect and share what inspires our work, and a window into the process and ethos that drives our vision: to catch the world by surprise through everything we create.

A platform where the rules relax and imagination can run untethered, briefcase is where we play with new ideas, materials and projects that fall outside of the status quo.
