EMBRACE THE BIG LIGHT
As the era of the harsh, traditional big light comes to an end; a more considered and sophisticated Big Light emerges—designed not only to illuminate, but to act as a focal point, carefully placed to complement the intention of your space.
JOURNAL // You may have come across the design mantra of “no big light” circulating on social media over the past few years. The sentiment refers to the typical and predictable ceiling fixture—a single, concentrated source of light that usually fails to flatter you, your space, or your design style. Frequently described as “hospital-like,” the notorious ‘big light’ has earned a reputation for casting harsh shadows and creating unevenly lit rooms.
Since its inception, the phrase has permeated generations and industries alike, making its way into Gen Z TikToks and acclaimed interior design publications. At its core, the movement reflects a desire for lighting that makes our spaces feel cozy, comfortable, and intimate – not cold, harsh or clinical.
As a self-certified, “big light” brand, we understand the frustration—it’s exactly what led us into lighting design in the first place. Unable to find fixtures that truly complemented his own space, Matthew had his heart set on creating alternatives that celebrated the Big Light as both a luminaire and a work of art. Through 13 years of R&D, experimentation and our own lighting collection, we’ve learned that the issue isn’t the big light itself, but rather the hue, brightness, and placement of the fixture.

Another way to flatter a space with a big light is by pairing it with ambient lighting. Table lamps, sconces, and task lighting help balance the eye as it moves through a room, creating a layered, evenly lit environment that feels intentional rather than overpowering.
Experimenting with fixture height can draw the eye through a room or direct focus to a specific area. In a stairwell, layering multiple Ova pendants from shortest to longest naturally guides the eye. Paired with dimming capabilities, this approach softens and warms the space.
Dimming, in particular, unlocks a wide range of atmospheres. A big light over a dining table should be able to dim down in intensity to match the drama or romance of an evening. When paired with wall sconces, the room begins to take shape—allowing the big light to anchor the moment while its surrounding light sources support it.
